Platform Positioning and Core Value

SANOG (South Asian Network Operators Group) is a non-profit industry organization founded in 2003. Positioned as a neutral communication community for internet infrastructure practitioners in the South Asia region, its core goal is to promote the development of internet infrastructure in South Asia through knowledge sharing and technical collaboration. It covers South Asian countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and is open to participation from industry practitioners around the world.

The organization's core activity is holding regular regional technical conferences every year, which has now reached its 44th session. Conferences include technical workshops, keynote speeches, peering exchange sessions and more, covering core network operation topics such as IPv6 deployment, BGP routing, DNS security, network automation, routing security, and network resilience. It also runs a scholarship program that provides funding for economically disadvantaged young technical practitioners and female practitioners to attend events, addressing the problem of uneven regional technological development. In addition, SANOG promotes the establishment of national network operator communities across South Asian countries, and has so far supported 6 countries to launch local NOG organizations.

Advantages, Disadvantages, and Suitable Scenarios

As a non-profit community, SANOG's advantages are very prominent: it has maintained a neutral, non-commercial positioning for more than 20 years, with purely professional technical exchanges, and has in-depth collaboration with top global industry bodies including APNIC, ICANN, and the Internet Society, so its content quality is widely recognized in the industry. At the same time, it adheres to inclusive development: its scholarship program lowers the participation barrier for practitioners in less developed regions, and has cultivated a large number of local network technology talents for the region.

Its limitations are also quite clear: its core value is concentrated in offline conferences, very limited technical resources are publicly available online, and it focuses heavily on the South Asian region, so it offers little practical value for practitioners based in China. It also currently has no Chinese localization support, creating a high barrier for Chinese-speaking users.
