ReoCities (reocities.com) is a non-profit internet history archiving project initiated by Restorativland. Its core goal is to restore the content of the original personal website platform GeoCities, which officially shut down in 2009, and preserve the legacy of early internet personal homepages from the 1990s to the early 2000s in a visually accessible, browsable format. The first version of the project launched in 2019, and it is currently open to access for free.
The project fully follows GeoCities' original "Neighborhood" classification system, organizing and archiving personal sites by different themes. Users can browse sites by theme category, and click to access the restored web pages; for MIDI and WAV audio files embedded in original sites, the project has restored playback functionality, which triggers automatically when you open the page. It recreates the authentic browsing experience of the first generation of personal websites to the greatest extent possible, while also retaining each site's last modification time and original access path to make source tracing easier.
The project still has some incomplete functionality at this stage: the search function planned by the official team has not been launched yet, so users can only browse layer by layer through categories and cannot search for specific content accurately; some sites still have issues with incorrect CSS paths and missing resource files, leading to abnormal display on some pages; some original sites also retain outdated or even violating content, and the project only adds a content warning without removing this material.
This project is completely free and open to the public. Chinese users can connect directly to access it without any proxy.
