Next Frontier AI is not an AI tool or SaaS product for individual users. It is a pan-European frontier AI challenge program run by SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation. Its goal is to use public funding and company-building support to help up to 10 teams build next-generation Frontier AI Labs over 24 months, ultimately selecting up to 3 labs with the potential to raise large-scale follow-on financing.

It is best suited to teams that already have strong technical talent and are capable of training serious models or building complex AI systems, including startups, universities, research institutions, and multidisciplinary core teams. Applicants must ultimately establish a European legal entity, with an effective headquarters in an eligible region such as the EU, EFTA, Israel, or the UK.

For Chinese teams, the main constraint is not access but eligibility and the requirement for a European entity.
