NBIS (National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden) is Sweden’s national bioinformatics infrastructure. Since 2008, it has provided bioinformatics and data science support to the Swedish life sciences research community. Training is only one part of its services, which also include project analysis support, software development, data management, data sharing, and support for high-performance computing resources.
Based on the website, NBIS Training covers a wide range of topics. It includes introductory courses such as “Introduction To Bioinformatics Using NGS Data,” “Python programming with applications to bioinformatics,” and “R Programming Foundations for Data Analysis,” as well as advanced topics including single-cell RNA-seq, spatial omics, epigenomics, machine learning, neural networks, cryo-EM data processing, reproducible research, and open science. Teaching formats include courses, workshops, seminars, online and in-person classes, with an emphasis on combining lectures with hands-on computer exercises. It also offers a two-year PhD mentoring program, the Swedish Bioinformatics Advisory Program, and tailor-made training.
Pricing information is limited. The page only states “Tailor-made training at support-level pricing,” but does not list public course fees, payment methods, or refund policies. In terms of certification, NBIS states that its training only provides estimated credit guidelines, and formal university credits require approval from the participant’s department. The website does not clearly mention certificates of completion.
Its main strength is its very strong institutional background: NBIS has around 120 experts across six sites in Sweden, serves as the SciLifeLab Bioinformatics platform, forms the Swedish node of ELIXIR, and is supported by the Swedish Research Council, SciLifeLab, major universities, and EU projects. The course content is highly aligned with real research practice, making it suitable for learners who need practical life science data analysis skills. The limitations are that the courses are mainly aimed at researchers in Sweden, while application requirements, fees, and participation options for international learners—especially users in China—are not very clear. Some courses are held in Swedish cities, and schedules and application deadlines also limit flexibility.
NBIS is better suited to PhD students, postdocs, PIs, researchers, staff scientists, and life science industry users, especially those who need training in omics analysis, research data management, R/Python, machine learning, or open science practices. Access from mainland China is not discussed in the main text, so it is considered unknown. If participating in online courses, users should independently confirm whether Zoom, YouTube, or related platforms are accessible.
