Holos is a Fediverse/ActivityPub communication client and relay architecture built around the idea that “your device is the server.” Unlike traditional Mastodon instances that store data on a remote server, Holos keeps private keys, posts, follow relationships, and the local database on your phone or computer. The relay provides a stable @user@domain identity, caches public profiles, manages offline queues, and forwards traffic via WebSocket.
In the communications/email category, Holos is closer to decentralized IM and federated social communication than to an email, SMS, or voice platform. Holos is explicitly free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with no ads, no premium plan, and no data monetization. The holos.social relay is free, and self-hosting is also supported. On the security side, private keys never leave the device, and DMs between Holos users use Signal Protocol end-to-end encryption. Recovery backups are encrypted with PBKDF2 and AES-256-GCM before being stored on the relay, and Holos claims the relay cannot decrypt them. However, standard ActivityPub private messages sent to non-Holos users may be readable by the relay while queued. The documentation does not mention certifications such as GDPR, SOC 2, or ISO 27001.
Its strengths are strong data sovereignty, a transparent architecture, support for custom-domain migration, auditability, and self-hosting. It is well suited to technical users who care about privacy, open source, and independent Fediverse identity. The downsides are that there is no web interface and an app must be installed. Official App Store/Play Store releases are not yet available; only F-Droid, AltStore, TestFlight, and direct installation packages are mentioned. It also has a learning curve for mainstream users and is not suitable for enterprise email marketing, SMS verification codes, or voice-notification use cases.
The documentation does not provide information about mainland China network availability, payment methods, or localization, so its accessibility from China can only be marked as unknown. Because it depends on Fediverse federation, mobile app installation, and potentially external relays, real-world performance needs to be tested independently. If your goal is Chinese-language social networking, you may want to compare Mastodon/Misskey instances; if your goal is email or SMS notifications, choose a dedicated email service provider or SMS gateway instead.
