adore.software is the official release and operation platform for the Amsterdam Declaration on Research Software Sustainability Funding, a global public welfare initiative launched by relevant bodies of the International Research Software Alliance. Its core goal is to urge research funding bodies around the world to prioritize research software sustainability and improve related funding policies and practices. The platform publicly hosts the full text of the declaration and a supporting toolkit, opens the declaration signing to individuals and organizations worldwide that support this concept, displays the list of existing signatories, and discloses the project's governance structure and implementation roadmap.
All content and the participation process on the platform are completely free. Any individual or organization that supports the concept of research software sustainability can apply to become a signatory to the declaration free of charge. Organizational signatories are also required to publicly disclose their progress in implementing the declaration's recommendations as required. To date, dozens of world-renowned research funding bodies and research institutions including the German Research Foundation, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, and ELIXIR European Bioinformatics Institute, plus hundreds of field practitioners have signed the declaration, giving the initiative high authority and industry recognition.
The biggest advantage is that it accurately addresses a current pain point in the global research community: a large number of research software lack long-term sustainable funding, which harms research reproducibility and resource efficiency. This initiative drives change directly from the funding end, with a perfectly targeted focus; it is also completely open and free, with a very low barrier to participation. The disadvantage is that it only serves as an initiative coordination platform, and does not provide direct research software funding or development services. It is also currently only available in English, which is not user-friendly for Chinese-speaking audiences.
The website can be accessed directly via the public internet, loads normally, and research institutions and researchers in mainland China can browse content and apply to participate without issues. This platform is suitable for research funding bodies, research management departments, and research software developers around the world to follow and reference, and relevant institutions in China can also participate in the initiative to help improve the domestic research software ecosystem.
