今日诗词 API is an open API that returns famous lines from classical Chinese poetry. Its key feature is not simple random output, but intelligent recommendations based on the user’s location, time, holidays, season, weather, scenery, city, and other contextual signals. It is designed for websites, blogs, mini programs, mobile apps, browser extensions, and other scenarios that want to display poetry that fits the moment.
It supports two invocation formats: JSON and SVG images. Regular websites can insert the JS SDK directly, while Vue, React, or Webpack projects can use the NPM package jinrishici. There is a dedicated SDK for WeChat Mini Programs, and Android is supported via Maven/Gradle SDKs plus a custom TextView component. For iOS, desktop apps, and other non-browser environments, the advanced JSON API can be used by first obtaining a Token and then sending requests with X-User-Token. Returned data includes the poem line, source, dynasty, author, full poem, partial translation, matching tags, popularity, cache time, and more, making the data structure fairly complete.
The service is free for non-profit use, but it explicitly states that it is “not open for commercial use.” If you profit from the API or its content, or place ads on pages where the API is the main content, that does not qualify for the free plan. In terms of request volume, there is in principle no limit when configured correctly, but a large burst of traffic in a short period may reduce recommendation quality. If a single IP exceeds 25 requests within 5 seconds, it will receive a 403 response.
Its strengths are the wide range of integration options and documentation that covers installation examples, API formats, error codes, testing methods, and FAQs. The intelligent recommendation mechanism is also better suited to creating page atmosphere than ordinary random quote-style APIs. The downsides are that 今日诗词 API itself is not currently open source, and the free version does not support server-side calls, Node environments, or server-side rendering. Although the service notes that it uses Spring-Boot, WebFlux, Netty, MongoDB, and Redis, and is deployed on Tencent Cloud in Guangzhou, the free version does not come with any reliability guarantee.
It is suitable for personal blogs, content sites, mini programs, and client-side apps as decorative or cultural content. It is not a good fit for products that require commercial authorization, strong SLAs, self-hosting, or backend bulk fetching. The site has completed ICP filing and is deployed in a domestic cloud data center, so based on the available text, access from mainland China should work directly. As an alternative, you can consider its older gushi.ci API, which returns random results, is simple to configure, and is open source.
