Project Positioning

Souffleurs d'Images is a non-profit public welfare service project operated by the French public welfare organization Souffleurs de Sens. Its core goal is to meet the needs of visually impaired people to enjoy cultural resources on an equal basis, and help them participate in cultural events such as exhibitions and performances barrier-free through volunteer-guided narration. The service currently covers multiple French cities including Paris and Marseille, and expanded to Geneva, Lausanne and other locations in Switzerland in 2024, with more than 250 partnered cultural institutions.

Core Process & Features

The platform opens services to three types of users:

• Visually impaired users can register and submit requests for accompanying services 15 days in advance, and the platform will match trained volunteers in the corresponding area, and coordinate arrangements for the agreed time and location ahead of schedule.
• Art students and artists can register to apply to become volunteers, attend a half-day free training on guiding and narration skills, and then independently accept matching requests.
• Cultural venues can also apply to become partners, join the service system for free, provide free entry slots for volunteers, and improve their own barrier-free service facilities.

The greatest value of this project is that it fills the service gap in the field of cultural accessibility. It adopts a human-centered one-on-one model, and the completely free mechanism greatly lowers the participation threshold for visually impaired people. Its limitations are also very clear: the service only covers a small number of regions in France and Switzerland, relying on a volunteer mechanism means there is a possibility of last-minute cancellations, the 15-day advance application requirement cannot accommodate spontaneous last-minute needs, and it only offers French-language service, with no support for speakers of other languages.
